Hello Neon!

28th of March 2016 |   BSC Signs

Are you ready for a neon sign? There's nothing quite like the vivid colors and vibrant glow of neon. Here's a quick guide to selecting the right neon sign for your business.

Is a Neon Sign Right For Your Business?

If you’re looking for unique signage with maximum impact, neon signs have a lot to offer. In this article we’ll explain the basics of neon signs, and show you some different styles.

A well designed neon sign attracts attention to your business, makes you look good, and brings in customers. That’s what we ask of any signage, and neon does its job well.

Neon signs are both practical and artistic, adding retro-cool visual impact to your outdoor advertising. Neon signs are bright and beautiful, with intense saturated colors. They’re perfect for attracting the attention of passing traffic.

We’ve all seen neon signs — our eyes are drawn to their beautiful glow as they stand out against the night sky. Neon signs hit their peak popularity around the middle of the 20th century, and over the years neon technology has improved and been refined. These days, neon signs are popular choices for entertainment venues, hospitality, restaurants, and bars.

Unique Neon Signage From BSC Signs

At BSC Signs we’ve been creating neon signage since 2002, and our customers continue to be very interested in having neon signs made for their businesses. While we love creating neon signs for our customers, it’s just one of our sign services. BSC Signs is one of Colorado’s leading full service sign companies. If neon’s not quite right for you, we also offer a wide range of signage options.

Here’s a neon sign that BSC Signs created for a Denver restaurant. It was featured on the cover of Sign Business magazine.

Types of Neon Signs

Most people think of neon signs in the traditional sense — a large exterior sign with neon tubes that display letters and words. Neon can be used in a variety of signs, including using neon elements in channel letter, blade, monument, and cabinet signs. An electric sign could even be a hybrid and include both neon and LCD light sources.

Neon tubes can act as design accents to give a sign an appealing glow, or the glass tubes can be used to display words or logos. Let's take a look at the different styles of neon signs.

Exterior Neon Signs

Here are two examples of large exterior neon installations. The first photo is a neon sign we made for Bad Daddy’s Burger Bar. As you can see in the photos, the Bad Daddy's logo is re-created in neon. This creates a very attractive and distinctive look.

Here’s how the sign looks during the day. You can see it at the Bad Daddy’s location at the Southlands Mall in Aurora.

Here’s another example of a traditional neon sign. This one was created by BSC Signs for Pasquini’s Bar & Pizzeria at Cherry Creek in Denver.

Interior Neon Signs

A custom interior neon sign can be a signature piece for high traffic locations such as restaurants or malls. Here’s a beautiful interior sign we created for Freddy’s Frozen Custard and Steakburgers in Denver.

This small neon sign was created for the local UL (Underwriters Laboratories) office in Denver. It’s a good example of using neon to create an accent sign. They’re not seen very often so they make a big impression with visitors.

Neon Window Signs

Using neon for an exterior facing window sign adds a nice touch to a storefront. Here’s a small neon sign we created for a restaurant, ready to be installed. The all important phone number is bright and vivid.

Exposed Neon Signs

Exposed neon signs use neon tubes that are visible inside a 3D channel letter. They’re placed within the letters, which are formed from thin sheet metal. The faces of a channel letter sign are normally capped with a translucent material and illuminated from behind. With exposed neon, they’re left open so the neon is visible and can provide an attractive glow.

Here’s an example of an open face neon sign we created for Lincoln 9 Shops in Denver. The Letters of the word “Lincoln” are created from individual channel letters, which were joined to create the handwriting effect.

Here’s another exposed neon project from BSC Signs. As you can see, it features gold/yellow colors. You have the option of choosing from many colors for the neon tubes.  Their natural colors are red/orange, or the blue you see in the Lincoln Shops sign. Other colors are achieved by coatings applied to the glass tubes at the factory.

Neon Signs — Things to Consider

We hope that the photos have given you some ideas on the many ways neon signage can be used for a business.

If you're ready to have a neon sign made for your business, there are a few things to consider.

Most importantly, you’ll want to work with a full service sign company with extensive experience creating neon signs. They should have a proven track record of creating solidly built, artistic neon signage. The sign’s design is important, but so is the quality of the components and the ruggedness of its construction.

We recommend that you look at some neon signs in person, both during daylight hours and at night. Photographs and video don’t quite capture the subtle light quality that makes a glowing neon sign so attractive. We can give you directions to neon signs in Metro Denver that we’ve created.

We can also show you photos of some alternatives to neon, and explain their advantages. It really depends on the look you want to achieve. We firmly believe in giving our customers all the information they need to make an informed decision. Our goal is to provide signage that offers the best long term value and maximum ROI for your business.

As far as durability and maintenance, neon signs are surprisingly rugged. A solidly built neon sign can operate for many years with minimal maintenance, and continue to provide vivid colors and intense light output.

A properly maintained neon sign can give decades of service. Have a look at this video from Save the Signs, about Denver’s historic Colfax Avenue neon signs. Some of these signs have been operating for more than 60 years and need a little TLC, but most are still going strong! Keep in mind that our current neon designs are going to have a more modern look and more reliable operation than the classics in this video.

If you’re interested in a neon sign for your business, one of our sign specialists would be happy to walk you through the process. They can provide some design ideas and help you determine if a neon sign is right for you.
