Monument Signs for Boulder's Flatiron Park

10th of February 2016 |   BSC Signs

BSC Signs created two illuminated monument signs for a large business park in Boulder, Colorado. They were fabricated using precision CNC routing techniques.

New Signage for Flatiron Park

With Boulder attracting so many tech companies, there's a strong demand for high quality business space. Flatiron Park offers many benefits for companies looking to locate in the area. The business park is focused on attracting high-tech, consulting, communications, and bioscience companies. As part of its corporate branding and website update, business park owners Goff Capital Partners also wanted a new look for their signage.

BSC Signs built and installed two large illuminated monument signs for Flatiron Park. We'd like to acknowledge the staff at Denver's OZ Architecture who designed the signs and helped us with project management. Thanks OZ! And we're pleased to announce that we'll be building seven more monument signs for Flatiron Park, this time with the goal of identifying individual buildings and tenants.

Monument Sign Design

The two signs are located at the main entrances to Flatiron Park, at the intersection of 55th Street and Central Avenue, and also at 55th and Flatiron Parkway. They replace existing signage with a fresh new design. These monument signs feature illuminated push-thru letters, backlit stand-off letters, and a design that matches the new corporate look. They feature the phrase "Connect. Create. Innovate."

Flatiron Park

Flatiron Park is a large business park in Boulder, Colorado. There are eighteen buildings in the business park, which is located about five minutes east of the city center, just north of Arapahoe Avenue and east of 55th Street. Flatiron Park offers about 700,000 square feet of office and flex space.

Visibility is extremely important for this kind of development. Signage helps present a consistent branding for the business park, and provides wayfinding for customers looking to quickly get to their destination buildings.

Fabricating the Signs

Fabrication of the signs took place at BSC Signs in Broomfield. Here are a few photos from the shop floor during construction. Push-thru acrylic letters with LED backlit illumination were used on the large panels. Here you can see BSC Signs fabricator Antonio doing some finishing work on the letter cut outs. They've been precision cut on the CNC router.

In a push-thru style sign, clear acrylic letters are inserted into their matching routed holes. The fit has to be perfect! As you can see in this photo, each letter has an acrylic flange that allows it to be secured to the panel after it has been pushed through. The flange will be cut down to a smaller size before the letter is installed.

Here you can see the letters that have been cut out by our CNC router operator from a thick sheet of acrylic. Accurately cutting out letters takes many hours of slow and steady progress.

Letters for Flatiron Park signs

The second part of the sign has the words "Flat Iron Park" mounted against a blue background. As you can see in the photos, these 3D letters are mounted using standoffs that place them a few inches away from the panel. They're also backlit, similar to a push-thru design.

In this close-up shot, you can see the stand-off spacers. Similar to the push-thru design, the letters have matching cutouts on the panel. Bright LEDs illuminate the letters from behind the panel, creating a halo effect.

PAINT FOR FINISH AND PROTECTION

To stand up to the wild extremes of Colorado weather, signs need to be protected from the elements. So the painting process is really important, and not just to give the sign a professional finish! Here's BSC Signs paint tech Dan applying a primer coat in the paint booth. We use low VOC paints.

The Installed Signs

Here are two more shots of the finished signs. We'll have to stop by again and take some pictures at night. The push-thru effect creates a dramatic backlit glow that's quite striking. Watch our Facebook page for more photos!

Thanks to our BSC Signs project managers, fabricators and installers for another successful project. These signs are seen by thousands of people every day, and they give the business park a very modern, professional look.

Plans for future signs

With the success of these first two monument signs, there are plans underway to install seven more signs at Flatiron Park. They will identify tenants in some of the large buildings. BSC Signs will also be providing signage for the owner's other business park, The Campus at Longmont, which has 34 buildings and 1.2 million square feet of office, flex, and warehouse space.

Flatiron Park is owned by Goff Capital Partners. Their website has leasing info: www.flatironpark.com
