A Touch of Paris in Vail, Colorado

12th of January 2016 |   BSC Signs Team

Owners of a French restaurant in Vail needed an exterior sign that would capture the attention of visitors. BSC Signs delivered a signature piece that would fit in well on the streets of Paris. As they say in France ... Formidable!

It's a challenge that every business owner faces — how to attract more customers? And what if those potential customers are visiting a beautiful Rocky Mountain alpine ski village, and are looking for a memorable place to have brunch, dinner, or some drinks?

For the management of Vintage, a French brasserie-style restaurant in Vail, the answer was to create an elegant exterior sign that instantly conveyed their message: Bienvenue! Welcome visitors! Come right in and relax with some drinks and wonderful French food ...

This unique sign presented interesting challenges for our team. Thanks to the excellent work by our designers and fabricators, the finished sign looks absolument parfait, if you don't mind us saying so!

After the restaurant's owners contacted BSC Signs with some initial design ideas, Project Manager Julia Harding drove up to Vail to visit Vintage in person and meet the staff for a discussion of ideas for the sign. She also took measurements and initial photos, in preparation for the design phase. At this point of a project, our permitting specialist checked with the Town of Vail, to make sure the proposed sign would be allowed under their local sign bylaws.

The sign would have a distinctive French look with gold decorative elements and letters, and intricate scrollwork. The color of the sign's curved metal backing panel would be the distinctive green patina of aged copper — which is the color of the existing trim on the building. The sign would frame a window that had existing gold lettering at eye level. This was a bold design choice that would definitely catch the eye of visitors passing by. Vintage is located on busy Vail Road, so there was the opportunity for an effective sign to be seen by thousands of people every day.

After an extended design and construction process, the sign was installed in December 2015. Here's a photo that shows the many design elements that went into its construction, from the 3D gold letters to the intricate scrollwork. As you'll learn in the next section, a terrific end result was achieved while employing some workarounds that kept the budget in check.

Details of the Design

The design phase began with the creation of 3D CAD illustrations to share design ideas with our customer in Vail. 3D designs can allow the viewer to move the proposed sign around in a 3D space, right on their desktop computer. This gives the customer a lot of confidence that the installed sign will look exactly the way they envisioned. At this stage of the project, there was a lot of collaboration with the client as the design was refined.

After researching and sourcing the materials needed for the project, and considering the amount of fabrication time involved, it was found that the cost was just going to be too much for the client's intended budget. We understand that — we've created signs for hundreds of restaurants. The design called for specialty items such as wrought iron scroll work that would have been assigned to one of our production partners, as well other premium parts and processes that would add substantially to the project's cost. This is a common situation for a sign project, and we will work with clients to find a way to build their sign at an acceptable cost. We call it value engineering, and we search for creative ways to meet our clients' budgets.

In the photo above, you can see the semi-circular curve of the top part of the sign and some design details, such as the gold rosettes and tassels. After initially sourcing the metal rosettes and tassels from traditional suppliers in Europe, our team found a manufacturer in the USA that was able to deliver excellent quality metal accents at a reduced cost. Another way we value engineered the sign was by using a replacement material for the lower scrollwork frame —  1/4" flat aluminum was cut and formed into the complex shapes.

We were also able to find precisely the right color for the letters, which were cut and shaped on our CNC Router. The plans originally called for expensive gold leaf, but with some experimentation, our painter found a convincing combination of gold's hue and glossiness. Solid 24K gold letters were not an option!

Our installation team had the Vintage sign installed by mid-December, just in time for the busy Christmas season. The Vail ski resort community is located just over one hundred miles west of our production facility in Metro Denver, and BSC Signs often does sign projects for businesses in Colorado's ski resorts and mountain towns.

Brunch or Dinner at Vintage in Vail

If you get a chance to visit Vail and would like to visit Vintage, it's located at 12 Vail Road, next to the Sebastian Hotel. Look for the sign — now that you've read about it, you can't miss it! You can even reserve a table online through their website:  It also has full menu listings. There are photos and restaurant updates on their Facebook page.  In this Google Street View image, you can see a wide angle view of the building before Vintage opened.

Vintage offers a champagne brunch, dinner, and a nice selection of cocktails and wine in their lounge. They serve up Mimosas, Champagne floats, Champagne cocktails, coffee cocktails, and special brunch cocktails — and many other drink choices.
