Project Spotlight: John Denver "Spirit" Statue

20th of June 2015 |   BSC Signs Team

The John Denver "Spirit" statue is now on display at the Colorado Music Hall of Fame at Red Rocks. BSC Signs helped with its installation.

Have you ever seen the "Spirit" bronze statue of John Denver? It's a majestic cast bronze of Colorado's famous singer and citizen. John Denver passed away in 1997, and the sculpture is a beautiful reminder of his life, his music, and the impact he had on the people of Colorado and the world.

Up until September of 2013, seeing "Spirit" involved a trip to Snowmass, Colorado, near Aspen. That's more than 180 miles west of metro Denver.

But now many more people will see "Spirit" in its new home at the Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison, which is just a few miles southwest of Denver.

In early June 2015, BSC Signs helped with the installation of "Spirit" at Red Rocks. It's now located at the new location of the Colorado Music Hall of Fame, beside the Red Rocks Trading Post.

The photo above shows "Spirit" at its original location near Aspen.

The statue was financed by his fans, and was created by American artist Sue DiCicco.  It was cast in bronze at the Artworks Foundry in Berkeley, California, and unveiled in 2002. It was then installed on the property of John Denver's Windstar Foundation in Old Snowmass, Colorado.

The bronze sculpture shows John Denver with an eagle landing on his outstretched arm, protected by a leather glove. He has a guitar hanging off his shoulder. According to The Aspen Times, "Spirit" weighs 1500 pounds and stands more than 15 feet tall.

The statue had been removed from the Windstar Foundation's property near Aspen in 2013, and was donated to the Colorado Music Hall of Fame, which at that time was located in Broomfield.

BSC Signs, also headquartered in Broomfield, was selected to bring the statue to the Hall of Fame's new location at Red Rocks. It had previously been in storage, pending the Hall of Fame's move.

The Red Rocks location is a spectacular setting for "Spirit". If you're not familiar with the Red Rocks Amphitheatre, it's an outdoor venue that opened in 1906, and seats 9,450 people. It's one of the most beautiful concert experiences anywhere, and John Denver performed at Red Rocks many times. This video produced by the Colorado Music Hall of Fame shows the important link John Denver had with Red Rocks. He performed at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre seventeen times between 1972 and 1989.

Our BSC Signs installation team was responsible for carefully and safely moving the statue to Red Rocks. The foundation work for the statue was already prepared, so we were able to install it on the new base. Our team was honored to be given the task of moving "Spirit" to its new home. The statue is large, heavy, and more than a little awkward to move, but the installation was successful and went smoothly.

You can see photos of moving day by clicking on the photo below. It will take you to the Hall of Fame's Facebook photo album page. The photos are by Chip Garofolo of Garo Productions.

The Colorado Music Hall of Fame will be adding a plaque to the installation. The Hall of Fame just moved to this site as well, so if you head down to see the statue, you'll also be able to see the John Denver exhibits at the Hall of Fame.

And did you know who was the very first inductee to the Colorado Music Hall of Fame? You guessed it, John Denver, in April of 2011. He has since been joined in the Hall of Fame by Judy Collins, Poco, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and others.

The Hall of Fame website has all the details:

  • BSC made the signs for a number of our stores and are always thrilled with the results. We work with Kenny Parker who is great about getting proposals back to us right away, coming up with design ideas that fit our brand and rearranging schedules to get us the install date we need. I have worked with a number of sign companies over the years and would absolutely recommend BSC over any of their competitors.
